Workshops & Healthy Activities for the Community

Alcohol Server Training

Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) is a global leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Proven effective by third-party studies, TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving.

Benefits include:

  • Compliance with state and local regulations
  • Protection from alcohol liability lawsuits
  • Decreased penalties for alcohol violations
  • Lower insurance premiums
  • Improved customer service and satisfaction
  • Increased staff professionalism

The On-Premise program is designed for servers at restaurants, bars, hotels, or any other establishment where alcohol is consumed on the premises. Employees learn strategies for serving alcohol responsibly while providing the best possible customer service.

The Off-Premise program addresses the sale of alcohol at grocery, liquor, and convenience stores. Employees learn strategies for preventing illegal alcohol sales to underage and/or intoxicated patrons.

The University version of TIPS is tailored for students in the college setting and provides them with the skills they need to intervene with their peers in social situations to prevent alcohol-related incidents.

Health Fairs & Other Community Events

The Prevention department is available for participation in health fairs and other activities in the community that promote healthy lifestyles. Staffed display tables offer written materials, visual aids, and activities to engage participants. Trained staff also provides community members with consultation, resources, and referral information.

Fresh Start Smoking Cessation Program

Developed by the American Cancer Society, the Fresh Start smoking cessation program prepares participants for a successful attempt at quitting tobacco. The four sessions consist of a combination of written activities and discussion that are designed to make the process of quitting manageable. Fresh Start provides participants with essential information and the support necessary in making this important life change.

Staff Training for Agencies, School Staff, and Businesses

The Prevention department offers a variety of topics for staff/employee training, which include Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Addiction and the Family, Current Trends in Substance Abuse, Stress Management, and Overview of Substance Use/Abuse/Dependence. These workshops can be delivered in the workplace or at the CAReS site and can be tailored specifically for the audiences' needs.

Roots & Wings Parenting Class

Roots and Wings is a multi-format, interactive learning program that combines effective parenting skills with an exploration of family standards on alcohol and other drug use.

Parents, teachers, and community agencies can bring this fun and effective way to improve children's lives to their own communities. A stable, safe environment equals happy, resilient children that will carry healthy skills into adulthood. The curriculum includes:

  • Session One - Risk Factors and Protectors (This session identifies both risk and protective factors for problem behaviors; it stresses the factors that adults have some control over. This information helps adults to recognize the power they have to buffer and protect children.)
  • Session Two - Standards (One of the strongest protectors for children is a family and community that models clear standards of acceptable behavior.)
  • Session Three - Teachable Moments (Certain situations present opportunities for adults to teach values, give information, or demonstrate appropriate reactions for children.)
  • Session Four - Setting Boundaries, Building Bridges (Consequences teach children how to plan ahead, make decisions, and solve problems - three skills for future success.)
  • Session Five - Feelings (This session emphasizes ways that adults can help children identify and express feelings appropriately.)
  • Session Six - Rituals and Traditions (The focus of this session is to empower adults to use traditions and rituals to enhance family closeness.)

~ The program provides certificates for training hours for foster parents or parents who need verification of their attendance.
