EVALUATION/WHAT TO EXPECT ON
YOUR FIRST VISIT

Congratulations for making that very important first step on your road to recovery by scheduling an appointment at CAReS. When you call for your appointment you will be asked a few basic questions If you are over 18 you must call yourself to schedule an appointment. Many people are not sure what to expect at their first visit (called orientation). You will have paperwork to fill out and go over with our helpful support staff. Within this process, a member of our medical staff will also interview you to assess and address any medical concerns. There is no charge for this visit.

Please make sure to bring along photo ID and any insurance information as our services are covered by many insurance plans, including Medicaid. If you do not have insurance, we have reduced fees based on proof of household income (pay stubs and tax returns). Please contact our billing office to discuss any payment questions you might have (718-373-4303 ext. 573 or ext. 576).

At your second and third visits, you will be interviewed by one of our counselors to determine your alcohol or drug usage. The counselor may also request a meeting with a family member to obtain additional information.

After all of the information is collected, you will work with your counselor to design a program that will consist of individual as well as group counseling sessions. It is impossible to predict how long your recovery process will take, but our experienced counselors will help you to achieve recovery according to your individual pace.

If you do not meet the criteria for outpatient services, you may be referred to our Prevention department for information regarding alcohol or substance usage.

Medical detoxification
and In-patient treatment

If your alcohol or drug usage is immediately threatening your health, you may be referred for medical detoxification in a hospital setting. Patients are discharged as soon as they are medically stable, and referred to participate in one or more forms of psychosocial therapy, peer-support groups and the like.

Inpatient rehabilitation ("Rehab") is for those individuals who lack the support to develop abstinence and recovery while at home. The typical rehab program lasts for 21-28 days. The patient lives at the rehab clinic for the period of treatment. Patients detoxify for the first few days of their rehab experience. Thereafter, they spend their days participating in a combination of individual and group psychotherapy, twelve step meeting participation, and recreational and occupational therapy.

Individuals who successfully complete an inpatient rehabilitation center and need additional support may be referred to one of our residential settings. Some recovering persons require this special extended support to help them maintain their sobriety (e.g., they are homeless, they are severely impaired and cannot manage their own living situations, they live with actively drug abusing people and to return to that environment would almost certainly assure relapse). At Cares, we have a few different levels of sober housing where you can live communally in a safe environment that encourages sobriety, community support, and twelve step meeting attendance.
